In the past, we all heard that Nursing Schools would begin making students obtain their CNA certificate before allowing them into Nursing School. In the past, it was just hearsay, and now it is Real. Nursing Schools all over are now requiring students to become CNA's before accepting them into Nursing Programs. Do you think this is right? or better yet do you think this will benefit the student going into their Nursing Career? Well, I will give my opinion and mines only! I definitely agree! Personally, I feel like the best way to delegate any task is to know the task you're delegating. I am aware some will disagree but I truly believe becoming a CNA before becoming a Nurse made me a more well-rounded nurse. Working as an RN in the ER there were times we didn't have a PCT/CNA or we were short-staffed (often) we as the nurse had to take care of all the patient's needs. This included toileting, feeding, adls, etc. The knowledge to safely and proficiently do these personal care tasks, I learned as a CNA. In both my nursing programs LPN and RN I was not taught how to properly change a patient, transfer a stroke patient, or even ambulation period. I was taught delegation, critical thinking, disease processes, and medication administration for the most part. Everything else was delegated. When you are on the floor as a Nurse you are asked to do so much more along with your assigned duties, and it is helpful if you know how to do them.
Over the last 6 months or so I have had several students obtaining their CNA certificate so that they can get into their Nursing Programs and I am super excited because I believe learning these skills will be so beneficial for them. So kudos to Nursing Programs that are requiring Nursing students to obtain this certificate.
Resilient Healthcare Academy wants to also help future Nursing students. Starting May 2022 RHA will start awarding our Future Nurses Scholarship to prospective students looking to obtain their CNA to enter into a nursing program. More information coming soon.
